- The nature of the creative process of Joana Vasconcelos is based on appropriation, decontextualization and subversion of pre existing objects and realities of everyday life.Sculptures and installations reveal a great sense of scale and color as well as the use of performance and video or photographic records assist in the realization of challenging concepts of programmed routines of everyday life.
- The artist offers us a vision but simultaneously a critique to the contemporary society and the various aspects that serve as statements of collective identity, especially those concerning the status of women, class differentiation or national identity.
- As a result of this strategy arises an awareness of the contemporary idiosyncrasies, where the dichotomies artisanal / industrial; private / public; tradition / modernity and popular culture / high culture come together and become able to renew the usual fluxes of the characteristics signification of the contemporary.
